A daycare center is being opened for the children of farmers in Gedeb. Some of the women farmers in the area are part of our Ama Commitment program. An initial payment is made as soon as the coffee is received at the site.
Financing has been much stricter this year due to the National Bank’s policy to control inflation.
There is an expansion of the Ama Commitment program. The plan includes building a water tank for flotation (removal of quakers) and increasing the number of drying beds.
This site is the largest drying station in Gedeb. It is naturally farmed under trees (mainly Ensete, also known as false banana). The best cherries are purchased from nearby farmers.
First, the coffee is floated to remove quakers, then placed on drying beds for 12–15 days. The green beans are hand-sorted by local women. In Addis Ababa, the coffee is stored at Moplaco, Gerji. Once processed, the coffee is transported to Djibouti by train.
