Origin: Burundi, Bujumbura - Burambi
Producer: 1.184 smallholder farmers
In Burundi coffee grows at altitudes ranging from 800 to 2,000 metres above sea level. Most of these territories have soils of volcanic origin, rich in nutrients such as nitrogen and with a high capacity to retain rainwater - approximately 1,200 millimetres per year which, together with the country´s equatorial climate, directly benefits the growth of coffee trees and the development of its fruit.
Coffee production in Burundi is primarily a smallholder activity, with an estimated 30% of households across the country depending on coffee for their livelihoods. Farms are small, less than one hectare, and the average number of trees per farmer is estimated to be between 50 and 250, a perfect ratio to ensure timely tree care and harvesting of high-quality coffees.
